The Ka‘o is a basic foot movement in which the hips sway in place. It is important to master this foot movement because all other foot movements have their foundation in this step. The hips move independently from the upper body, as if suspended like a pendulum from the spine. The Ka‘o moves from side to side, right to left.
Start with the feet slightly apart, at hip’s distance. Your weight should be centered between the feet. The knees are slightly bent and flexed.
Ka‘o to the right by raising the left heel and hip and shifting your weight to the right.
Ka‘o to the left by raising the right heel and hip and shifting your weight to the left as the left heel comes down to the floor.
